Duplicate events are designed to minimize the element of chance inherent in the deal of the cards. In a duplicate event, the same hands are played at multiple tables, each with different players. This allows for a more accurate comparison of skill, as the outcome of each hand is determined by how well the players bid and play relative to others who played the same cards, rather than by the luck of the draw.
A key element of duplicate is the scoring system, which often uses matchpoints. Matchpoint scoring focuses on comparing the results achieved by different pairs on the same hand. For each hand, a pair earns matchpoints based on how their score compares to the scores of other pairs who played the identical hand at different tables. You earn 1 matchpoint for each pair you beat, and ½ a matchpoint for each pair you tie. The higher your matchpoint total, the better your performance on that hand.
The accumulated matchpoints across all the hands played determine the overall winner of the duplicate event. This scoring method emphasizes relative performance and strategic decision-making. Duplicate bridge has long been a popular and competitive format for serious bridge players. Trickster Clubs allows duplicate bridge along with duplicate events for all our games except Oh Hell. By eliminating the randomness of card distribution, duplicate events provide a more level playing field and reward skill and expertise.
